:: Unemployment Deferment ::

This deferment is for the Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) Program. Contact your loan servicer to discuss your options and download an Unemployment Deferment Request Form PDF. You must continue making your payment until you're notified that a deferment has been granted.

Eligibility Criteria

Maximum Time Limit: Borrowers with loans first made before July 1, 1993 - 2 years
Borrowers with loans first made on or after July 1, 1993 - 3 years

To qualify for this deferment, you must be diligently seeking but unable to find full-time employment in the United States in any field or at any salary or responsibility level.

In addition, you must either provide documentation of eligibility for unemployment benefits or register with a private or public employment agency if there's one within 50 miles of your residence. If you're requesting an extension of the current unemployment deferment, you must certify that six diligent attempts for full-time employment have been made or provide documentation of eligibility for unemployment benefits.

You must reapply for the deferment every six months.
