:: Internship/Residency Deferments ::
This deferment is for the Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) Program. Contact your loan servicer to discuss your options and download an Internship/Residency Deferment Request Form PDF. You must continue making your payment until you're notified that a deferment has been granted.
Eligibility Criteria
Maximum Time Limit: 2 years
To qualify for an Internship or Residency Deferment, you must have an outstanding balance on a loan made before July 1, 1993. You must request this deferment and provide your lender a statement from an authorized official of the organization with which you're undertaking the eligible internship or residency. The statement must certify that:
- The internship or residency program is a supervised training program requiring the completion of at least a bachelor’s degree before acceptance into the program.
- You've been accepted into the program.
- The anticipated beginning and completion dates, or the beginning and end dates for minimum participation, will satisfy the state's requirements before an individual is certified for professional practice or service, whichever is less.
